Obituary for Virginia Madison Cothran

Virginia Madison Cothran, 92, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Moundville Health & Rehab facility, Moundville, AL.

Mrs. Cothran was born March 20, 1925 at home in Hale County, Alabama. She graduated from Hale County High School in Moundville in 1942. She attended Massey-Draughon Business College in Montgomery. She then worked many years in Greensboro, AL for S.W.H. Williams, Jr. and later Nicholas H. Cobbs, Jr. as a legal secretary. She also resided for a time in Pensacola, FL with her husband and then also in Morehead City, NC. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, AL. Through the years she was active as a choir member, Sunday School teacher, ladies Bible Study teacher, president of the Warrior Presbytery Women In The Church.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, George Rutherford Cothran; her son, George Rutherford, Jr. "Rudy", her parents, Melvin & Myrtle Christian Madison; brother Leonard Madison and adopted brother James Madison.

She is survived by son Charles Melvin Cothran (Rollanda) Greensboro and daughter Diane Cothran Gilpin (Clayton) Newport, NC; six grandchildren: Heather Cothran Newberry (Jeff) Tifton, GA; Charles Melvin Cothran, Jr. "Chip" (Shannon) St. Louis, MO; Theodore Madison Cothran "Ted" (Kim) New Orleans, LA; Jeremy Allen Flake (Brittany) Edmonton, Alberta Canada, Catherine Elizabeth Flake and fiance' Jordan Christopher Lloyd (Greenville, NC), Heather Diane Gilpin, Newport, NC and 10 great grandchildren: Benjamin Lang & Virginia Madison Newberry "Madi", Aurora Lane and Escher Davin Cothran, Jonah Miles, Charlotte Grace, and Hadley Joy Cothran, Seth Lawrence Jones, Louis Charles and Paul Alexander Flake. Special friends: Deborah Crooke, Will Lizotte, John Flake and many aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 4 from 6-8 pm at Kirk Funeral Home-Greensboro with Graveside service & burial Monday, June 5 at 11 am at Greensboro Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers will be Billy Earl Christian, Tommy Christian, Harris Coleman, Ralph Cothran, Ralph Cothran, Jr., Robert Cothran, John Flake, John Shipley.

Honorary Pallbearers are all other active and inactive elders and deacons of First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.

Special thanks to the staff of Moundville Health & Rehab, Hospice of West Alabama and Dr. Larry Skelton for the love and care given to Virginia and her family.
