Obituary for Dr. David Earl Potts

DR. DAVID EARL POTTS Dr. David Earl Potts passed away March 28, 2018 at the age of 67. David will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the Judson College and Marion communities. He is predeceased by his mother, Louise Green Potts, and his father, Alton Earl Potts. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Beth Bloodworth Potts; his daughters, Kristin Potts Helton (John) and Shannon Louise Potts (Phil); eight grandchildren, Gavin, Harper, John David, Laura Beth, Levi, Patch, Ryder, and Teague; and his sister, Elizabeth “Libby” Louise Potts (Dale Peterson). Born on July 1, 1950, in Birmingham, Alabama, Potts spent his childhood there, graduated from Ramsay High School, and earned his B.A. degree from Samford University. He received his M.S. in Education from Samford University and PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama. He served as president of Judson College for 27 years and served as vice-president of development and executive vice-president in years prior. Through his dynamic leadership and commitment, Potts expanded the endowment, campus development, community services and ministries, as well as state and worldwide missions. Beyond his devotion to Judson, Potts endeavored to improve the health services and economic development in Perry County and the Blackbelt region of the state. He was a founding board member of Sowing Seeds of Hope and a former president of Alabama Possible. Known for his gentle spirit, generosity, and gracious love, his personal commitment to Christ overflowed into his presidential leadership and his relationships with family, students, and so many others whose lives he touched. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, April 8, at 3:00 at Judson College in Marion, AL in the Alumnae Auditorium. The family will receive guests from 2:15-2:45 before the service and immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Judson College, Sowing Seeds of Hope, Siloam Baptist Church, or Marion Academy.
