Obituary for Merita Halsey (Averett)
Merita Averett Halsey, 80, went to her eternal home on July 13, 2020. She was born on August 17, 1939 in Tuscaloosa, AL to John Clifton Averett, Sr. and Myrtle Hendrix Averett.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Carlton Edward Halsey; her sisters, Faye Ruddell; and her brother John Clifton "Bubba" Averett, Jr. and her daughter, Carolyn Holcombe. She is survived by her son, Gary Halsey; her daughters Vickie Narbit, and Deborah Laney (John); and her brother, Donald Averett.
She is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Heather Strawser (Philip), Jennifer Manuel (Brian), Kelly Gandy (Trey), Ron Freeman, Jessica Alldredge (Philip), Tyler Elmore, Grace Laney, Elizabeth Laney and John Wilson Laney V; and by 6 great-grandchildren: Eden Manuel, Truett Manuel, Sophia Strawser, Anna Strawser, Wade Gandy and Kendall Gandy.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at the Demopolis Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 10:00 am with Kirk Funeral Homes, Demopolis Chapel directing. Pallbearers are: Ron Freeman, Tyler Elmore, Lane Averett, Doyle Ruddell, Trey Gandy, Philip Alldredge and Michael Averett. Honorary pallbearers are the Perry County Nursing Home, Woodhaven Manor and Southern Care.
