Obituary for Maurice Joseph Fitz-Gerald MD

Dr. Maurice Joseph Fitz-Gerald, 86 of Demopolis, AL went to his eternal home on November 18, 2021. He was born on August 5, 1935 in Mobile, AL to Edward Douglas Fitz-Gerald and Marie Lacy Fitz-Gerald. He attended Springhill College in Mobile, where he earned degrees in Biology and Physics before graduating medical school from UAB. After completing an internship at St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida, he served two years as a Captain in the Medical Corp at Fort Benning, Georgia. He moved to Demopolis, Alabama and practiced family medicine, along with Drs. Whitfield, Holifield, Ketchum, and Perret. Dr. Fitz-Gerald believed God gave him the gift of practicing medicine so that he could serve his patients and the community, which he proudly did for fifty-five years.

He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Nita Jo Greene Fitz-Gerald; his sons: Maurice Joseph Fitz-Gerald, Jr. (Janet), Don Edward Fitz-Gerald (Deeya), Mack Gerard Fitz-Gerald (Carolyn), Timothy Patrick Fitz-Gerald (Linda), and Michael Sean Fitz-Gerald (Meredith); and his daughters: Nita Marie Fitz-Gerald, Mechelle Fitz-Gerald Ollinger (Thomas, deceased), Marlene Fitz-Gerald Merical (Don), and Catherine Fitz-Gerald Feinstein (Mike). He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Vigil for the Deceased and Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 21, 2021 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Demopolis. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 22, 2021 at 11:00 am also at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church with Father Justin Ward officiating and Kirk Funeral Homes, Demopolis Chapel directing. A graveside service will follow at Demopolis Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be: Maurice Joseph Fitz-Gerald, Jr., Don Edward Fitz-Gerald, Mack Gerard Fitz-Gerald, Timothy Patrick Fitz-Gerald, and Michael Sean Fitz-Gerald; Honorary pallbearers will be: Joseph Fitz-Gerald III, Douglas Fitz-Gerald, Mel Knapp, Tristen Fitz-Gerald, Harry Feinstein, Dr. Brandon Merical, Lowell Jeff, Josh Rogers, Daniel Rogers, Will Fitz-Gerald, and Sam Feinstein.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to St. Leo the Great Catholic Church.
