Obituary for Waymon Moore

Waymon Moore
Waymon Gerald Moore passed away Friday, August 18, at his home in Hoschton, GA after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife Shirley Brewer Moore, stepdaughter Tammy Clay (Dean), stepson Larry Riddle (Denise), grandchildren Brianna Clay, Austin Riddle and Caitlin Riddle, all of Georgia, sister Jean Smith (Hubert) of Linden and 13 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Harold, Aubrey and Clifford Moore, all of Marion, and his sisters Wylodene Perkins of Marion and Burlia Coleman of Birmingham.

Waymon was born December 26, 1925 in Perry County, AL to William Jonathan (Willie) and Dora Hartley Moore, the sixth of seven children. He left high school during WWII to serve his country in the U.S. Navy, seeing action in the Pacific. After the war, he returned to Marion to graduate from Perry County High School and Marion Military Institute before enrolling at Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Upon graduation in 1952, he took a job with a crop insurance company in Atlanta and remained in that field for his entire career, eventually becoming a founding partner, regional manager and member of the Board of Directors of Agri General Insurance Company which operated in 35 states.

After retirement, he made his home at Big Canoe in the Georgia mountains where he met his wife. A philanthropist throughout his life, he was a founding member of the Georgia Mountain Auburn Club, a board member for Child Abuse Prevention of Pickens County and for the Perry County High School Alumni Association and volunteered for many other organizations such as Meals on Wheels and the non-denominational Chapel at Big Canoe. One of his greatest legacies was the establishment of the Moore Money Club, a family investment club through which he guided his nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren in investments, money management, charitable giving and Christian service.

A graveside service will be held at Marion Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 23, with a Memorial Service to be held at the Chapel at Big Canoe on Tuesday, August 29 at 2:00 PM.
