Obituary for Bernice Virginia Edmonds Oakes
Bernice Virginia Edmonds Oakes 92, of Greensboro, passed away August 19, 2017, at Hale County Hospital. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m Tuesday August 22, 2017, from Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Steve Vernon and James I Davis officiating. Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro Chapel directing.
Bernice was born February 8, 1925, in Perry County to John D. and Ada Plummer Edmonds.
She was preceded by her parents; her husband, James Bennett Oakes; daughter, Shirley Oakes; sisters, Ford Edmonds, Faye Stripp and Margie Freeland.
Survivors are her son, Woodfin Oakes of Greensboro; sisters, Lee Hartley of Montgomery and Joanne Sponaugle; brother, Howard Edmonds of Selma; 3 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Charles Callaway, John Callaway, Alex Harper, Brandon Oakes, Donald Barnette and Dean Tolar.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St.Jude's Hospital or Mt. Caramel United Methodist Church.
